Minister Georg Georgiev: Bulgaria Condemns in the Strongest Terms Any Attack Against Humanitarian Missions, Diplomatic Personnel, and UN Staff

22 March 2025 News

"Bulgaria condemns in the strongest terms any attack against humanitarian missions, diplomatic personnel, and UN staff." This was stated to journalists by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Georg Georgiev, during his visit in Veliko Tarnovo on the occasion of the city's holiday.

"I take this opportunity once again to express my condolences to the relatives of our deceased compatriot. From this point onward, we expect an investigation to be conducted. So far, the information available to us does not tip the scales in any direction and there is no question of a deliberate attack. You know that immediately after we learned of the incident, I spoke with my Israeli counterpart, Mr Gideon Sa'ar, who assured me that the strike did not originate from the Israeli Defence Forces," commented Minister Georgiev, adding that the Israeli side is conducting its own investigation.

"A separate investigation will also be carried out by the UN and everything that comes to us as data will be reflected in the appropriate way," assured our top diplomat.

He went on to explain that the current situation in Gaza makes it extremely difficult for any country to conduct an investigation, except for those who are on the ground. "From this point forward, everything we know will be communicated in the appropriate way," the Foreign Minister emphasised, specifying that given the renewed hostilities in Gaza, the situation there remains very complex. "This is also the reason why we called for  adherence to the previously reached ceasefire agreement, for the immediate release of the hostages in Gaza, and for all parties to return to negotiations," said Minister Georgiev.

He expressed hope that the mortal remains of our compatriot will be in Bulgaria very soon. "The Bulgarian state will assist in every possible way to ensure this happens as quickly as possible," the Bulgarian Foreign Minister stated categorically.
