Deputy Minister Maria Angelieva at the conference dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day: The Holocaust is a constant reminder of the dangers of hatred, intolerance and racism

On behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Georg Georgiev, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Maria Angelieva addressed the participants in the conference dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and in memory of the distinguished Holocaust researcher Prof. Yehuda Bauer, deceased in 2024, which took place today at the Representation of the European Commission in Sofia. The conference was jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, the Diplomatic Institute attached to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of the State of Israel in Sofia and Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’.

‘The Holocaust is a constant reminder of the dangers of hatred, intolerance and racism. It is also a lesson for all humanity that it is never too late to stand up against hate speech and hate crimes’, Deputy Minister Maria Angelieva said in her speech. She stressed the importance of 27 January as a date on which we pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, but also the need for joint efforts of state institutions and society to confront contemporary forms of anti-Semitism, hatred and intolerance. Deputy Minister Angelieva highlighted the efforts of the Republic of Bulgaria in the domestic and international arena to tackle the challenges of anti-Semitism and paid tribute to the life and work of Prof. Yehuda Bauer, highlighting his merits for the accession of our country to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, whose founder is prof. Bauer.

The Ambassador of the State of Israel to Sofia, H.E. Mr. Yosef Levi-Sfari, the Vice-President of the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria ‘Shalom’ Eli Anavi, the Director of the Diplomatic Institute Tanya Mihaylova, academics and scientists also delivered speeches at the conference.
