In the framework of the General Debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister took part in another significant event - the UN Security Council High-Level Open Debate on Leadership for Peace. The meeting was chaired by Slovenia as the rotating president of the UNSC for this month and was aimed at members of the Council and the entire world organisation to discuss how to restore its credibility and improve its functioning.
Participants in the forum discussed the need for renewed commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, respect for international law and implementation of UNSC resolutions. They also shared their visions for strengthening the multilateral system, which can deal more effectively with international peace and security issues.
Bulgaria remains committed to the norms and principles of international law and multilateralism as the best investment in strengthening and defending national sovereignty. This is what the Bulgarian Foreign Minister said in his statement to the Council.
He also stressed that the most effective way to tackle the trend of increasing number of conflicts around the world and the disregard for the norms and principles of the UN Charter is to build trust and strengthen leadership, protect the values of democracy and human rights and implement the Security Council resolutions and the decisions of international courts.
The UN Security Council needs to restore its credibility as a global body responsible for peace and security, Kondov said and highlighted the crucial role of the elected members of the Council as bridges that promote unity, strengthen multilateralism and enhance its effectiveness.
With Bulgaria's participation at the forum, our country has once again demonstrated that it approaches the debate at the UN General Assembly with determination to promote multilateral, workable solutions. This is of the utmost importance for the sake of global peace, the maintenance of sustainable security and stability and the well-being of future generations.
Kondov also took part in the meeting convened at the invitation of US President Joe Biden in support of Ukraine’s reconstruction in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other world leaders - presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers of countries united by the determination to support Ukraine in achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace, as well as to assist the country in its speedy recovery thereafter.
Earlier in the day, Ivan Kondov made a statement on behalf of Bulgaria in the Plenary segment of the High Level Meeting under the auspices of the President of the UN General Assembly to address the existential threats posed by sea level rise.
