Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Angelieva met with International Telecommunication Union Deputy Secretary General Tomas Lamanauskas

On 3 September 2024, Maria Angelieva, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union, who is visiting Bulgaria to participate in the meeting of the Committee on ITU (Com-ITU) of the European Conference on Posts and Telecommunications (CERT), hosted by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Mr. Lamanauskas briefed Deputy Minister Angelieva on the expected outcomes of the ITU Committee meeting, as well as on the priorities of the Union's activities in the main areas of work — radio communications, standardisation and development. The Deputy Secretary General highly appreciated Bulgaria's participation in the work of the ITU, including in the framework of our country's current membership in one of its governing bodies — the ITU Council. He underlined Bulgaria's significant role in the transformation processes in the governance of the Organization. On behalf of the ITU, expressed special gratitude for the Bulgarian government's decision to provide assistance for the reconstruction of the telecommunications infrastructure in Ukraine destroyed as a result of the Russian aggression through a voluntary contribution to the ITU Special Trust Fund for Ukraine.

For her part, Deputy Minister Angelieva expressed satisfaction with the visit of a representative of the ITU leadership to Bulgaria. She reaffirmed the high importance that the Bulgarian side attaches to the participation in the work of the ITU, as evidenced by our active membership in the Council.

In the course of the talks, the two sides shared views on a wide range of topics, including preparations for upcoming important events such as the Future Summit and in particular the ongoing negotiations on the Global Digital Compact (22—23 September 2024, New York), the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29, 11—22 November 2024 in Baku), the World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA-24, 15—24 October 2024, New Delhi), etc.
