Mariya Gabriel: Bulgaria's accession to the OECD is one of our country's main foreign policy priorities

25 March 2024 News

Under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel, a meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Mechanism for the process of talks and preparatory activities for Bulgaria’s accession to the OECD was held.

The meeting provided information on the findings and recommendations derived from the technical review reports, as well as measures already taken and planned to align policies to OECD standards. The focus of the discussion was also the adopted decision of the Council of Ministers on the composition of a team working on OECD issues at the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Paris, France. An addendum to the National Roadmap of OECD cooperation activities for the three-year period 2023 to 2025 has also been approved.

‘Bulgaria's accession to the OECD continues to be one of our country's main foreign policy priorities. I thank the members of the IMCM and the teams of the line ministries for their hard work, for the results achieved and for the consistent commitment’, Mariya Gabriel said.

She also stressed the key role of the National Assembly in the process of Bulgaria's accession to the OECD to speed up the adoption of important legislative changes. It was also pointed out that Bulgaria is considering the establishment of a specialised parliamentary committee under the National Assembly — an important mechanism, enshrined in the recommendations of the organisation.

‘The report for Bulgaria is positive. It reflects the expectations for the political stability of our country, it states the good and accelerated pace at which our country is moving. It takes into account the progress achieved so far and the upcoming accession reviews’, Mariya Gabriel said.

A delegation led by the OECD Deputy Secretary General, Ulrik Knudsen, is scheduled to visit the country from 2 to 4 April to confirm the commitment to complete the negotiation process.
