26 February 2024 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel took part in the event ‘Women, Peace, security’ organized by More Women in Power and H.E. Zakia El Midaoui — doyen of the diplomatic corps and Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco in Bulgaria. Co-organizers of the event were also the President of the Association Evelina Tsileva, the President of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Tsvetan Simeonov and the President of the organization Women Act Greece May Zanni.

‘The UN Women, Peace, Security Agenda is a global roadmap for justice, security and human rights. She defends the view that sustainable peace can only be achieved when women's voices are heard and their rights are protected’, Mariya Gabriel underlined.

In her speech, she recalled that for the first time in its history Bulgaria became a member of the Executive Council of UN Women for the period 2023 — 2025. The country's main priorities include promoting gender equality and women's empowerment.

She focused on supporting women in innovation and highlighted the opportunities that the green transition provides for more girls to be leaders in the fight against climate change.

‘The role of women and their participation in diplomatic missions to promote peace and security and to prevent and resolve conflicts will become increasingly relevant. I believe that women and girls can contribute to a better, more peaceful and safer society,’ Mariya Gabriel concluded.
