Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel attended the regular monthly meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. The foreign ministers of the member states discuss the situation in the Middle East, the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Sahel region.

‘We are concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the risk of regional spillover of the conflict. Access to humanitarian aid and the protection of all civilians must be a priority. Bulgaria supports a two-state solution. It is important to have an agreement that guarantees the security of both countries’, the Deputy Prime Minister commented.

A special guest at the Foreign Affairs Council meeting was Yulia Navalnaya, wife of the deceased Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

‘On the eve of the second anniversary of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, today we again sent a message of united efforts and solidarity with Ukraine. Supporting Ukraine is a strategic investment in the security of the Black Sea region and Europe’, Mariya Gabriel said. The Deputy Prime Minister also informed about the upcoming conference on the security of the Black Sea region, which will be held in Sofia in April.

During her visit to Brussels, Mariya Gabriel also met with European Council President Charles Michel. The Deputy Prime Minister thanked for the support for Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen. The two also discussed topics such as the euro area, the agenda of the upcoming European Council in March and the European elections.
