The Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the UN, OSCE and international organisations in Vienna has been elected Vice-Chair of the IAEA Board of Governors for the period 2023-2024

03 October 2023 News

On 2 October 2023, the Bulgarian Permanent Representative to the UN, OSCE and international organisations in Vienna, Ambassador Emilia Kraljeva, a member of the Board of Governors on behalf of Bulgaria (Governor), was elected one of the two Vice-Presidents of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the period 2023-2024. Speaking after her election, Ambassador Kraljeva congratulated the outgoing Chairperson of the Board (Czech Republic) for her successful work, wished the newly elected Chairperson (Argentina) well and stressed that she would be honoured to serve as Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Governors and would work together with the Chairperson and all Board Members for the successful functioning of the Agency.

Along with the General Conference of Member States, the Board of Governors is one of the two main policy-setting bodies of the IAEA. It reviews and makes recommendations to the General Conference on the IAEA's financial statements, programme and budget. It reviews membership applications, approves nuclear safeguards agreements and the publication of IAEA safety standards. It discusses current topics on the Agency's agenda, including security-related policy issues and the adoption of resolutions on them.

Within the one-year mandate as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors, the Bulgarian Permanent Representative will support the work of the newly elected Chairperson from Argentina, Ambassador Holger Federico Martinsen, in close coordination with the IAEA Secretariat and the Director General of the Organization, Rafael Mariano Grossi.
