27 July 2023 News

On 26 July 2023 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria hosted political consultations with Georgia.

On the Bulgarian side the consultations were led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tihomir Stoychev and on the Georgian side — by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Teimuraz Janjalia.

In the course of the consultations the Bulgarian side reaffirmed its traditional support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders. A special emphasis was placed on Bulgaria's traditional and active support for Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic perspective and the reform process. On the Bulgarian side, the readiness of our country, as before, to continue sharing experience and providing assistance in the course of the reforms and the implementation of the criteria was explicitly emphasized on, while the Georgian side was encouraged to continue working actively and consistently to achieve the desired foreign policy goals for EU and NATO membership, set in its constitution.

Deputy Minister Stoychev described the political consultations as an excellent opportunity to give a new impetus to the bilateral relations after the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Various topics of mutual interest were discussed and the excellent partnership between the two countries both bilaterally and in the framework of various international organizations and forums was appreciated.

Opinions were also exchanged on a wide range of issues on the regional and international agenda, including Russian military aggression against Ukraine, challenges to regional and global security, the Eastern Partnership, etc. The shared desire to intensify bilateral cooperation in the field of trade and economic ties was noted. In this sense, connectivity and energy diversification, especially in the context of a dramatically changed geopolitical environment, have been brought to the fore.

Military cooperation between the two countries was also discussed, as well as the possibilities for deepening Bulgarian support in this regard, including in the context of NATO and the EU.

The projects funded by the Bulgarian Development Aid were highly appreciated.
