‘The Heart of Bulgaria’ exhibition visits UNESCO

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the inscription of the Rila Monastery on the World Heritage List, a photo exhibition entitled ‘The Heart of Bulgaria’ is being presented at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from 24 to 28 April 2023.

Composed of 20 impressive photographs of the Rila Monastery, the exhibition is held under the patronage of the Bulgarian National Commission for UNESCO and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The exhibition is organised by the Institute of Balkan Studies with Centre of Thracology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science, the State Cultural Institute under the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Bulgarian Embassy in France.

The official opening of the exposition took place on 24 April 2023. The history of the Holy Monastery of Rila, its importance as a World Heritage Site and its role in preserving Bulgarian spirituality over the centuries were presented. The participants were prof. Rumiana Preshlenova, Director of the Institute of Balkan Studies with Centre of Thracology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Dr. Alexandra Milanova, scientific coordinator of the exhibition, Father Ivan Karageorgiev, representative of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The Embassy of Bulgaria in France was represented by Ms. Zornitsa Grekova, Deputy Permanent Delegate of Bulgaria to UNESCO.

The Guest of Honour was Mr. Ernesto Ottone, Assistant Director General for Culture at UNESCO, who welcomed the initiative and congratulated Bulgaria for its effective contribution to UNESCO's overall activities. He shared his excellent impressions of his visit to Bulgaria in March 2023.

The opening of the exhibition was honoured by representatives of the diplomatic corps in Paris, officials of the UNESCO Secretariat and the World Heritage Centre, and many friends of Bulgaria in France.
