We celebrate the European Anti-Trafficking day – 18th October

18 October 2021 News

Today, 18th October, marks the European Day against Trafficking in Human Beings.

The fight against human trafficking is a priority of every Bulgarian government. Trafficking in human beings is a serious crime against the person, personal freedom and human dignity that transcends national borders. Combating trafficking in human beings requires serious efforts on the part of the entire international community, including close cooperation between countries.

On the occasion of the European Day against Trafficking in Human Beings, the second part of the prevention campaign, organized by the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime with the support of the EU EMPACT program, has started. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been part of the campaign since June 2021 and works closely with the Administration of the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, the Ministry of Interior, the State Agency for Child Protection and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.

The campaign is entitled "Don't play with their destiny", and the focus is on sexual exploitation and the use of sexual services provided by victims of trafficking. It is intended to cover both the countries of origin of victims of trafficking and the countries of destination.

Hundreds of young women risk their lives every year. Sexual exploitation is one of the most common forms of human trafficking and annually, according to the Prosecutor's Office of Republic of Bulgaria, over 300 people become victims. Usually, these are young women and girls deceived by the hope for a better life.

Since the beginning of the year, 13 victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation have received protection and support through specialized services at the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings.
