19 July 2021 News

On the Day of the Bulgarian Diplomatic Service, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Svetlan Stoev met with the Club of Foreign Ambassadors Speaking Bulgarian.

"Language is the most direct connection between people," said Minister Stoev in his greeting to the participants in the workshop. It was hosted by Polish Ambassador Maciej Szymanski, with 13 key members.

Among the main topics of discussion were the domestic political situation after the elections in Bulgaria and the constitutional steps to convene the 46th National Assembly and form a regular government.

The process of organizing and conducting elections abroad was also discussed. Minister Stoev expressed his and the Bulgarian state's gratitude to all foreign authorities for their support for the elections in the respective countries, including for the timely consent to the opening of polling stations, which were now 69% more than the elections in April. In this context, some ambassadors shared good practices in organizing the voting of their fellow citizens abroad, including by mail.

Minister Stoev shared his expectation for a constructive dialogue and the formation of a regular government soon, which would give a longer-term direction to the governing of the country. He stressed that the Cabinet has successfully fulfilled its tasks of organizing and conducting fair and transparent elections for Bulgarian citizens, and that the work continues on a number of other short-term and medium-term goals.

Among the priorities of the caretaker cabinet after the elections is the finalization of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, as well as measures in the area of the rule of law.

The position of our country on the start of the negotiation process for the accession of the Republic of North Macedonia to the EU was also discussed on the foreign policy priorities of Bulgaria. Minister Stoev stressed that the current cabinet has been extremely active in its work on this topic, and for the last two months the dialogue with the authorities in Skopje has been maintained at various levels and with special frequency.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is focusing on the next actions in order to build on what has been achieved so far. Minister Stoev stressed that concrete steps are expected from the Republic of North Macedonia to guarantee the intentions stated by the authorities in Skopje to observe relations as good neighbors and constructiveness.

Among other topics of interest to diplomats were measures to implement Bulgaria's transition to a low-carbon economy and security in the Black Sea region.

The club of foreign ambassadors speaking Bulgarian has existed since 2019, and currently has 18 ambassadors accredited in Bulgaria. This was the first meeting of the Club since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
