Bulgaria was elected a member of the Executive Board of the UNESCO International Oceanographic Program

Bulgaria was elected as a member of the Executive Board of the UNESCO International Oceanographic Program (IOP) The elections took place on 21 June 2021 as part of the ongoing 31st session of the IOC General Assembly.

One week earlier, Bulgaria was also elected as a deputy chairperson of the Bureau of the Convention for Safeguarding of the Underwater Cultural Heritage at the 8th session of the Convention held in Tunisia. In the field of underwater archeology, the Bulgarian scientist Kalin Dimitrov is a member, with a four-year mandate, of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Council (STAB) of the Convention.

Bulgaria's election to the two prestigious UNESCO Intergovernmental Committees is a recognition of the active work of Bulgarian scientists and specialists in the field of marine sciences and underwater archeology, namaly from the Institute of Oceanology with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Varna, the National Committee on Marine and Ocean Affairs, the Center for Underwater Archeology in Sozopol, as well as the role of the National Commission for UNESCO, which activities are coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
