24 February 2021 News

At his request, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Northern Macedonia, Bujar Osmani, who is traveling in transit through Bulgaria.

During their working meeting, bilateral relations, the European perspective of the Republic of Northern Macedonia and the challenges we face during the COVID-19 pandemic were discussed.

Zaharieva confirmed our principled support for the European integration of our southwestern neighbour, subject to the relevant conditions. The two ministers reviewed joint work on fulfilling the obligations of the 2017 Friendship Treaty and discussed the upcoming convening of the intergovernmental conference, which will have its session when the two sides approve the draft protocol.

The Bulgarian side pointed out that according to the 2017 Agreement, a future meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission should make a full review of the implementation of the Agreement, adopt an annual report on the work of the Joint Multidisciplinary Expert Commission on Historical and Educational Issues and indicate specific future cooperation actions.

The ministers expressed satisfaction with the constructive tone in which talks are being held between them and between diplomats from the two ministries, and discussed work on specific projects that will improve cohesion between the two countries.
