Interdepartmental Council on NATO resumes activities

02 November 2012 News

“Bulgaria always has been among the countries that demonstrate a good level of co-operation among its various departments and in co-ordinating messages on issues of security, such as NATO, as well as within the EU”. Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov said this at a joint news conference with Defence Minister Anyu Angelov after a meeting of the Interdepartmental Council on NATO today.

The Council exercises its powers in regard to Bulgaria’s commitments regarding the Common Security and Defence Policy and the need for improved co-ordination in what it does within the two unions, Minister Mladenov said.

At the first meeting after the re-activation of the Interdepartmental Council, discussions also included the continuing process of building a database of Bulgarian civil society professionals who could participate in missions of international organisations in crisis management.

“From this year, on the basis of what is called the comprehensive approach, together with the involvement of all agencies, there will be specific, non-military, opportunities for our country to participate in tasks facing NATO in the time ahead,” Minister Angelov said.

Participants in today’s meeting of the Council carried out a comprehensive review of the activities of NATO in 2013, in which Bulgaria is the leader in many projects.

The main topic of the next Interdepartmental Council in December will be cybersecurity.
