Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva and UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay discussed the cooperation between Bulgaria and the international organisation at a dinner which Bulgaria’s chief diplomat hosted for the French head of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
Azoulay was highly appreciative of Bulgaria’s sustained efforts, as a member of the UNESCO Executive Board, towards reforming the organisation.
The agenda also included the key priorities in the work of the international organisation, such as gender equality, Africa, and fostering youth creativity and entrepreneurship.
During the dinner, the two delegations were treated to a live performance of Nestinari (fire dancers). Since 2009, Nestinarstvo (ritual barefoot dance on smouldering embers) has been one of the four Bulgarian elements on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The Director-General of UNESCO is paying an official visit to Bulgaria to share in the festive celebration of 24 May, the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and of Slav Letters.
