Bulgaria supports pan-European nature of Council of Europe

16 May 2019 News

In the framework of the 129th session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Bulgaria emphasized in its intervention the importance of preserving the Organization’s pan-European nature while seeking a common understanding of its values and principles.

The session took place in Helsinki, Finland, on May 16-17. The participants discussed the current challenges facing the Organization, as well as its achievements in the sphere of human rights, on the day of its 70th Anniversary. The member states presented their views about the possibilities for the CE to emerge from its present political crisis, and expressed their willingness to seek unity in order to overcome it.

Proceeding from the 2019 annual report of the CE Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland, the session dealt with the following three topics: improvement of the political monitoring by the statutory bodies of the Council of Europe and the creation of a joint, supplementary crisis response crisis response mechanism; keeping in place intergovernmental cooperation as one of the pillars in the Organization’s work; and protecting and preserving the achievements of the CE legal system in order to prevent the fragmentation of the single European legal space. Attention was also given to the need to strengthen the interaction between the European Union and the Council of Europe through political dialog, joint initiatives and cooperation in the area of the law.

Towards the end of the session, Finland reported on its accomplishments in pursuit of the priorities of the Finnish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, before the next six-month Chairmanship was officially assumed by France.
