Minister Nickolay Mladenov participates in EU – ASEAN Summit

On April 26 and 27 2012, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov is taking part in the 19th EU – ASEAN Foreign Ministers Summit in Brunei, which was opened by EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and the Secretary General of ASEAN, Surin Pitsuwan.

 

The forum discussed the strengthening of the EU-ASEAN partnership, the global financial and economic situation, security threats, climate change and energy security. In his speech, Minister Mladenov emphasised the importance of EU accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, as well as the Middle East and North Africa.

 

Ministers are to adopt an Action Plan to extend EU-ASEAN co-operation for the period 2013 - 2017, which should encourage partnership in security, trade, crisis management, human rights and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

 

During the forum, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister held bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of Vietnam, Brunei and Myanmar.
