Bulgaria appoints new Chargé d'affaires to its embassy in Minsk

27 April 2012 News

On April 27 2012, in accordance with a decision by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ivailo Ivanov will arrive in Minsk to take up his duties as Chargé d'affaires of the Bulgarian Embassy in Belarus.

Mr Ivanov’s appointment in Belarus takes place in the context of the overall restoration of the normal functioning of the diplomatic missions of European Union member states in Minsk.

Yesterday, EU Head of Mission Miara Mora returned, as all ambassadors of other countries in the Union are returning.

In early 2011, relations between Belarus and the EU deteriorated significantly when the EU put pressure on Minsk after the December 2010 presidential elections which saw opposition protests brutally suppressed and opposition leaders and civil society activists arrested and put on trial.

On February 28 2012, Belarusian authorities forced the head of the EU Delegation and the Ambassador of Poland to leave the country after the EU expanded its sanctions against Belarus.

On February 29 2012, Bulgaria recalled its ambassador to the Republic of Belarus, Zachary Radukov.
