Deputy Prime Minister Zaharieva Gave an Award to Eugene Schuyler for his Contribution towards the Liberation of Bulgaria

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva posthumously awarded American diplomat and opinion-maker Eugene Schuyler an MFA symbol of honour, the Golden Laurel Branch, for his contribution towards the Liberation of Bulgaria. Bulgaria’s Ambassador Tihomir Stoychev presented the award to the American’s successor, Schuyler Grant, at a ceremony in Bulgaria’s embassy in Washington on 9th of July, 2018.
In his speech, Ambassador Tihomir Stoychev highlighted Eugene Schuyler’s role as consul general of the USA in Tsarigrad, and as chair of the Commission to Investigate the Atrocities in the Process of Quenching the April Uprising of 1876. Together with American journalist Januarius MacGahan, Schuyler visited various places in Bulgaria, and drew up an official report which resulted in the public in Europe supporting the Liberation of Bulgaria. In 1879, the chair of the Bulgarian National Assembly, exarch Anthim I, sent a telegram on the part of the Bulgarian people, thanking Schuyler for his contribution to the Liberation of the country.
