18 May 2018 News

“In its capacity as holder of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Bulgaria facilitates the enhancement of the mutually complementary role of the Council of Europe and the EU,” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yuri Sterk said, addressing the foreign ministers of the Council of Europe Member States.

Sterk headed the Bulgarian delegation to the 128th Session of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers at foreign-minister level, which took place in Elsionore under the chairmanship of Denmark.

In his statement, the Bulgarian diplomat stressed the extraordinary importance of Council of Europe Member States respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the rest of the countries. He also dwelt on the significance of the Session on the eve of the organisation’s 70th anniversary.

The agenda of the meeting included discussions on the current challenges to democratic security, on conflicts and crises in Europe, securing the long-term effectiveness of the system of the European Convention on Human Rights, cooperation between the Council of Europe and the European Union, and other business.

Out of all 47 Council of Ministers Member States, 34 were represented by ministers or deputy ministers.
