Minister Zaharieva Presents a Golden Laurel Branch to UNICEF Representative in Bulgaria María Conde

08 May 2018 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva presented a Golden Laurel Branch and a citation to the Representative of UNICEF in Bulgaria María Jesús Conde for her active work for improving child well-being and for her excellent cooperation with the national institutions. Mrs Conde’s tour of duty is drawing to an end and she will depart from Bulgaria.

“For years, UNICEF has been a real partner of the Bulgarian Government and we have achieved so much together, ensuring family care to Bulgarian children and support to the families, as well as working with a number of institutions involved with juvenile justice and with combating violence against children,” Deputy Prime Minister Zaharieva said further on.

María Conde thanked and stressed that the badge of honour of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is for all her colleagues.

“It was a pleasure working here. When I came to Bulgaria for the first time, my first appointments were with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and with Ekaterina Zaharieva, who was then Minister of Justice. I was impressed by how much your country had done over the last ten years for the protection of the rights of the child. The Bulgarian Government has made significant progress in improving child well-being. Today Bulgaria is a role model in Europe of children’s deinstitutionalisation. The rights of the child are at the centre of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU,” Conde pointed out.

Maria Conde has been UNICEF Representative in Bulgaria since 2015. Until then, she held the same post in the Dominican Republic.
