The Republic of Bulgaria welcomes as a positive sign the decision announced by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to stop, as of today, nuclear tests and launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles, to shut down its nuclear test site in the Northern part of the country, and not to use nor proliferate nuclear weapons and their production technology to third countries.
We consider this act of the North Korean leadership as an important step in creating an atmosphere conducive to dialogue with the Republic of Korea and the United States of America, a more suitable general political climate ultimately leading to complete, irreversible and verifiable denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and achievement of lasting peace, based on the UN Charter principles.
As a member of the European Union and rotating President of the Council, the Republic of Bulgaria reaffirms its commitment to the EU’s critical engagement policy toward the DPRK as confirmed in today's statement by HR Mogherini.
