Declaration by the Bulgarian Government
14 April 2018 NewsOn numerous occasions, we have stated that we are absolutely opposed to the use of chemical weapons. There is no cause that justifies the murder of innocent civilians, children included. The use of chemical weapons amounts to a war crime.
In response to the chemical attack on civilians in Syria, a coalition of countries engaged in a limited rocket airstrike tonight, targeting facilities for the production of chemical weapons.
The targets were carefully selected to avoid casualties.
We view this one-off military operation as a warning for the Syrian regime to cease such unlawful action in the future.
At the same time, we would like to express concern over the possible escalation of conflict, and we call on the Syrian regime to cease all action that violates international humanitarian law.
Measures for de-escalation need to be taken, and complete unimpeded humanitarian access to the victims of the chemical attack on the Syrian city of Douma needs to be ensured.
We would like to express our full support for the work of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and expect to see full cooperation with the Organisation’s investigative teams in their activities. Those responsible for the Douma chemical attack must be found, and must bear responsibility for what they have done.
Being part of the international community, Bulgaria supports its efforts to ensure peace, and find a political solution for the situation in Syria.
