23 January 2018 News

An Informal EU Directors General Meeting took place on 22 and 23 January 2018in Sofia. Delegates from the EU Member States, the European Commission, the General Secretariat of the Council and the Candidate Countries participated in the meeting.

The meeting agenda was divided into two sessions. The Presidency priorities were presented to the delegates during the first part. In the subsequent discussion, the delegations expressed their full support of our priorities and willingness to work closely together in order to achieve visible results and add-value for European citizens, even on the most difficult of dossiers such as migration, security, defence and the social dimension of EU policy. The delegates from the Candidate Countries actively participated in the deliberations and specifically applauded the Bulgarian Presidency’s efforts to put the Western Balkans back on the EU agenda.

The second session focused on a more comprehensive debate on the concrete deliverables needed to maintain and improve the EU Unity and Cohesion as a necessary prerequisite for a more effective Union which works for the benefit of all EU citizens.

During the first day of the EU Directors General visit was held a special seminar, analysing the specific trends in the behaviour of the Member States in the EU decision-making process. The Delegations took part in a discussion lead by the heads of the Sofia and Berlin offices of the European Council on Foreign Relations.
