Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Sterk met with Brigitte Collet, French Ambassador for Climate Change Negotiations, Renewable Energy and Climate Risk Prevention, at the Foreign Ministry. She is in Bulgaria to take part in the regular meeting of the director generals and the directors for climate change which opened today within the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The European Union should assume a leading role on the issue of climate and environment protection, Brigitte Collet said during the meeting at the Foreign Ministry. In her opinion, the EU should show the direction and manage to consolidate the big fast-developing economies like China, India and Brazil around its position.
“In its capacity as President of the Council, Bulgaria will try to find consensus between the member states on the climate issues,” Deputy Minister Sterk noted. He underscored that it is important for the EU member states to have a consolidated position in the context of the global challenges related to this problem which will guarantee the Union’s leadership in the formation of the world policies on climate and environment protection.
The two discussed the monitoring and the fulfilment of the commitments agreed under the Paris climate agreement, the results of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP23) and the expectations related to the next regular conference of the parties (COP24) which will take part this year as well as the possibility to overcome the differences on climate issues with the USA. At the end of the meeting Collet presented before the Bulgarian side France’s expectations for the establishment of a working group under the aegis of the UN which would work on the affirmation of the global pact for environment proposed by President Macron.
