17 January 2018 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva presented the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighbourly Relations between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia before two National Assembly committees – the Foreign Policy Committee and the Committee on European Affairs and Oversight of European Funds.

The MPs from the two commissions approved the bill ratifying the Treaty and it will be put to the vote in the plenary hall tomorrow.

The Treaty was ratified by the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia on Monday.

“This is a historic success of the Bulgarian diplomacy. We got the Treaty without mediation and owing to the courage of the two prime ministers – of Bulgaria Boyko Borissov and of the Republic of Macedonia Zoran Zaev. In her opinion, the most important thing is that the implementation of the agreement has began already before its ratification as representatives of the two countries already mark together common historical holidays. According to Bulgaria’s top diplomat, this will lead to the implementation of specific projects which will bring the citizens from both sides of the border closer.

Zaharieva also appealed to the politicians to leave history to historians. The lineup of the multidisciplinary commission which should make a review of the common history will be set within three months after the ratification.
