We observe World Human Rights Day today, 10 December. This year also marks the70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is one of the world’s most important and comprehensive international agreements. This fundamental instrument recognises human rights and freedoms as ones to which people are entitled by birth, ensures equality, and guarantees protection against cruel and degrading punishment. This is the most translated document in the world, available in more than 500 languages.
Drafted by representatives of various legal and cultural backgrounds from all the world’s regions, the Declaration establishes universal values and a common benchmark for achievements to all peoples and all nations. The principles enshrined in the document are as topically relevant today as they were in 1948, when it was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.
Bulgaria has ratified all core international conventions on human rights and freedoms. Twenty-five years since the ratification of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms are also completed this year.
