Deputy Prime Minister for Judicial Reform and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva conferred today with the Chairperson of the Croatian Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Miro Kovač.
The discussion focused on the European perspective of the Western Balkans as a key foreign policy priority during the upcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council.
“Bulgaria backs the efforts of the countries of the region along their road to European integration, and we sent them only positive signals,” Deputy Prime Minister Zaharieva said. As a case in point, she cited a joint meeting of the governments of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia, held several days earlier, at which nine documents targeting practical cooperation were signed. “The agreements signed follow the Good-neighbourliness Treaty, which is acknowledged as a fine example of new-type cooperation in the region,” Zaharieva pointed out.
“The Presidency of the European Union is of paramount importance for Bulgaria. Two years after us, this responsibility will pass on to Croatia, which is why it is crucial that we should work in close coordination, especially on the topics which are in our regional interest,” the chief Bulgarian diplomat said.
Ekaterina Zaharieva and Miro Kovač agreed that the countries of the region need to work hard on the reform process in which some of the countries have made greater progress than others. “We must help them cope with the problems and look ahead,” the Croatian Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Chairperson said. For her part, Minister Zaharieva added that the countries of the Western Balkans are moving in the right direction.
