Deputy Prime Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva conferred with Michel Barnier

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva conferred today with Michel Barnier, the European Commission’s Chief Negotiator for the withdrawal of the UK from the EU. The conversation took place in Brussels, within the framework of Zaharieva’s working visit for participation in a General Affairs Council meeting.
Ekaterina Zaharieva and Michel Barnier discussed the progress of negotiations with the United Kingdom. The chief Bulgarian diplomat reiterated full support for the Chief Negotiator’s efforts and expressed her conviction that the approach he follows is in the interest of the Union. As far as Bulgaria is concerned, the foremost priority in the first phase of the negotiations are citizens’ rights and settlement of the financial obligations of the United Kingdom’s to the EU while honouring all commitments assumed.
The sides also discussed a visit that Barnier is due to pay to Sofia in December within the context of preparations for the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council. “The Bulgarian Presidency is fully prepared to assume its responsibilities within the framework of the institutional mechanism under Article 50,” Minister Zaharieva said. “Keeping the unity of the 27 Member States is an important task of the Presidency,” she stressed.
