Minister Zaharieva talks with women ambassadors accredited to Bulgaria

16 November 2017 News

The women ambassadors accredited to Bulgaria congratulated Deputy Prime Minister for Judicial Reform and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva on her active foreign policy.

“You are not only one of the few women foreign ministers in the world but also one of the few ladies in diplomacy,” they pointed out. “No difference should be drawn between men and women politicians or diplomats because we thus go to the other extreme,” Minister Zaharieva said for her part. In her opinion, people should be judged on their merits.

Minister Zaharieva met with the ladies heading the diplomatic missions of Azerbaijan, Brazil, Finland, Hungary, India, Israel, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam. They gathered for a cup of tea at the invitation of Her Britannic Majesty’s Ambassador Emma Hopkins in her residence.

During the informal meeting, Ekaterina Zaharieva familiarised her interlocutors with the priorities of the forthcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Our chief diplomat pointed out that a tangible European perspective for the people, especially young people, in the region is the prime objective of the Bulgarian Government not only during the Presidency but also as a strategic priority of Bulgaria’s foreign policy.

The ladies also discussed the issue of the refugee crisis. They concurred on the need of the EU addressing the causes that push asylum seekers to the Union.
