Georg Georgiev: “We can show one of Bulgaria’s best faces through culture”

Deputy Minister Georg Georgiev had a meeting with the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) Director Andrew Murray. The meeting was a part of the country’s regular contacts with EUNIC GLOBAL and was organised jointly with the Culture Ministry and the State Cultural Institute with the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Deputy Minister Georgiev highlighted that Bulgaria supports the directions set forth by the organisation for the development of a new EU strategy for international cultural relations. He noted that the joint projects with EUNIC and the delegations of the European Union in third countries have already become a common item within the programmes of our diplomatic representations.
“The Western Balkans and their European perspective are one of Bulgaria’s key priorities in connection with the upcoming Presidency. The prospects before the young people are a highly important topic for us. We consider that the partnership with the EUNIC can yield very good results. We will encourage our diplomatic representations in the region to establish closer contacts with the network of cultural institutes for the implementation of projects within the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Culture is not only heritage. It also entails tourism, economy and science. With its help, Bulgaria can show and promote one of its best faces,” Georg Georgiev also said.
Andrew Murray said that, in the context of the Presidency, the country has a unique chance to popularise its cultural and historical heritage but, for this purpose, it should work hard on a strategy for its fulfilment.
The two interlocutors were unanimous that cultural diplomacy will have an increasingly important role for the building up of relations and bridges between the countries in different spheres in the future.
