American Jewish organisations: ‘The world should remember the salvation of the Bulgarian Jews

19 September 2017 News

The Bulgarian delegation to the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly in New York met with leaders of the American Jewish organisations.

President Rumen Radev, Deputy Prime Minister for Judicial Reform and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva and the Prime Minister’s Chief of Cabinet Roumyana Buchvarova conferred with the leaderships of Jewish organisations in the US, including B'nai B'rith International, the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Congress and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

"Our history proves that the Bulgarian and the Jewish peoples share common values," President Radev stressed.

“We have been friends of Bulgaria for centuries. We are aware of the 75th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews next year and we will work together with Bulgaria so as to stress its unique role, because the world does not witness many such examples at present. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov is a big friend of ours,” American Jewish Committee Executive Director David Harris told Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva.

"I hope that an EU-Israel summit will be organised during the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council. Friends should discuss their common topics directly. However, no such meeting has taken place for five years now," Minister Zaharieva noted. She thanked the Jewish organizations in the US for their role for the strengthening of Bulgaria’s relations with the USA and Israel.

One of the goals of the upcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2018 is to encourage commemorating the Holocaust victims and directing EU efforts towards fighting anti-Semitism, xenophobia and language of hatred.

On 29 June 2017 in Geneva, Bulgaria was named a Liaison Country in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and thus became the first country that has started a process for full membership in the organisation since 2009.

Traditionally, the head of the Bulgarian delegation to the UN General Assembly session in New York and the Minister of Foreign Affairs meet with the leaders of the Jewish organizations in the USA. These meetings are an excellent platform for discussion of a broad range of questions of mutual interest.
