Celebrating September 21, the International Day of Peace

19 September 2011 News

The International Day of Peace - September 21 – will, as is traditional, be celebrated throughout the country through a number of public initiatives, including the laying of wreaths at monuments to those who lost their lives in war.

The motto of this year's celebration is "Peace and democracy, let your voice be heard."

The celebrations will honour the ongoing Year of Youth - an opportunity to highlight the importance of peace to young people and their role in achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

In Sofia, the International Day of Peace will be celebrated with a gathering at the monument to the Unknown Soldier on September 21 at noon.

September 21 was declared International Day of Peace by the United Nations General Assembly.

The celebrations in Bulgaria again are being organised by a steering committee made up of representatives of the UN Association in Bulgaria and the Central Council of the Union of War Veterans in Bulgaria.
