General information

Security level:

Public security in the country is within normal limits, but there have been a number of cases of theft and armed robbery.

Healthcare:

There is a danger of infection with viruses with similar symptomatology of Dengue and Zika. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria recommends that travellers follow the advice of the Ministry of Health and the Bulgarian Red Cross to protect themselves against mosquito bites and infection with the Zika virus: http://www.redcross.bg/advice/zika.html

Local currency:

The local currency in Puerto Rico is the American Dollar (USD).

Climatic characteristics:

Hurricane season is from June to November. It is advisable to monitor the information on http://severe.worldweather.org/; http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ and https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tropical-cyclones

Travel papers and visas

For travel to Puerto Rico, Bulgarian citizens need the same documents and visa as for visiting the USA. The passport must be valid for six months from the date of entry and have an adequate number of blank pages.

Competitive service

European Emergency Travel Document:

In case of emergency (lost passport), Bulgarian citizens can seek on-the-spot assistance from a diplomatic mission of any EU Member State in Puerto Rico to obtain an Emergency Travel Document.

Certifications and legalizations:

In order to be valid in Bulgaria and to be able to serve before the Bulgarian institutions, all documents issued by the authorities in Puerto Rico to Bulgarian citizens must bear the stamp of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Puerto Rico. Then, they need to be certified by the Embassy of Puerto Rico in Berlin or Madrid. The signature and certifications of the Embassy of Puerto Rico in Berlin or Madrid are certified by the Consular Office of the Embassy of Bulgaria in the capital of Germany or Spain.
Once the documents have been so prepared, they must be translated into Bulgarian by an authorized company in Bulgaria and certified by the Department of Certifications and Legalizations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria.
