Republic of Maldives
Diplomatic relations were established on 14 August 1984 at the initiative of Bulgaria. Since 2014, the Ambassador of Bulgaria to India, stationed in Delhi has been accredited to the Maldives. In 2026, Mr. Ahmed Zayan Abdulla Salih was appointed Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in the Maldives, with headquarters in Male. In 2021, the Bulgarian national Mr. Hristo Chepishev served as Honorary Consul of the Maldives in Bulgaria from 2021 to 2025.
Political contacts with the Maldives are sporadic. In September 2003, the President of Bulgaria Mr. Georgi Parvanov visited the country as part of an Asian tour. During this first Head of State level visit, a meeting was held with the President of the Maldives, Mr. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. In 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives Mr. Abdulla Shahid paid a visit to Bulgaria, during which meetings were held with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Transport, the Minister of Tourism and the Ministry of Economy.
Trade between the two countries is insignificant, with its volume hardly exceeding 2 million USD per year. The bilateral legal framework is also underdeveloped, with the only significant bilateral agreement being the Air Communications Agreement.
