Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
Diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Sri Lanka were established on 10 June 1962. The Embassy of Bulgaria in Colombo, headed by a CDA, was closed down in1990 and ever since the Ambassador of Bulgaria to India has been accredited to Sri Lanka. Since 2001, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Poland has been accredited to Bulgaria. In 2012 the Bulgarian national Mr. Borislav Sarandev was appointed as Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Bulgaria, stationed in Sofia. In 2020, the Sri Lankan national Mr. Andre Fernandes was appointed as the Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in Sri Lanka, with headquarters in Colombo.
Relations between Bulgaria and Sri Lanka are traditionally friendly, but political contacts are limited. A working visit of the Bulgarian president to Sri Lanka was carried out in 2009, and in 2005 the Speaker of the National Assembly visited the country to provide humanitarian aid. Contacts between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs in the recent years include several bilateral meetings at ministerial level within the framework of international forums, last one in 2023, and political consultations. Bulgaria and Sri Lanka cooperate in the UN and other international organizations, including by providing mutual support of candidatures.
The trade between the two countries is limited, rarely exceeding 10 million USD on an annual basis.
Among the more important bilateral documents concluded between the two countries, are the Memorandum of Cooperation between the BCCI and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka; Agreement on Cooperation between the Central Cooperative Union and the National Cooperative Council of Sri Lanka; Memorandum of Cooperation between the BCCI and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce; the text of an intergovernmental Agreement on Economic Cooperation has also been agreed upon.
