Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal
The diplomatic relations with Nepal were established on 15 April 1968. The Ambassador of Bulgaria to India, stationed in Delhi has been accredited to Nepal, whereas the Ambassador of Nepal in Berlin is accredited to Bulgaria. In 2011, the Nepalese national Mr. Bhola Bikram Thapa was appointed as Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in Nepal, stationed in Kathmandu.
Relations between Bulgaria and Nepal are friendly, but the political dialogue is sporadic. In 1967, the Nepalese King Mahendra paid an unofficial visit to Bulgaria on his own initiative, and in 1978 the Bulgarian Minister of Culture paid an official visit to Nepal. Meetings between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and Nepal have been held within the framework of international forums, the last of which took place in September 2018.
Cooperation between Bulgaria and Nepal in the economic field is not active and the trade turnover is insignificant – less than 1.5 million USD per year. In December 2012, a Nepal-Bulgaria Chamber of Commerce was registered in Kathmandu.
The bilateral legal framework remains underdeveloped, whereas in the recent years a MOU for Political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal and MOU on cooperation in Youth Development. have been concluded. The two countries cooperate well within the framework of the international organizations, vis-a-vis support for candidatures.
People-to people contacts and cultural exchange have been carried out during Bulgarian mountaineering expeditions in Nepal.
