People's Republic of Bangladesh
Diplomatic relations with Bangladesh were established on 26 January 1972. Bulgaria was among the first countries after India, Bhutan and the German Democratic Republic, to recognize the People's Republic of Bangladesh as an independent and sovereign state. In 1992, the Bulgarian Embassy in Dhaka was closed down, and ever since the Bulgarian Ambassador to India, based in Delhi, has been accredited to Bangladesh. In 2020 the Ambassador of Bangladesh, stationed in Bucharest, has started to get accredited to Bulgaria. Bulgaria is in the process of appointing a new Honorary Consul in Bangladesh. In August 2013, consent was given for the appointment of Mr. Georgi Ivanov as Honorary Consul of Bangladesh in Bulgaria, based in Sofia.
Relations between Bulgaria and Bangladesh are traditionally friendly, but the political dialogue is not active. The last high-level exchange was the visit to Bulgaria of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina in May 2016, who participated in the Global Forum of Women Leaders and held bilateral meetings with the Bulgarian President and Prime Minister. Contacts between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs are carried out within the framework of international formats, the last of which were during the 11th ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting in 2013. The two countries enjoy good cooperation within the framework of the UN and other international organizations, incl. vis-a-vis support for candidatures; good partnership is also established within the framework of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
Trade and economic relations have been marked by a significant growth in recent years, with the trade deficit shifting from Bangladesh to Bulgaria at present. In 2025, the bilateral trade is 221.5 million USD, of which 18.5 million USD are Bulgarian exports.
Among the important bilateral documents signed with Bangladesh, are Agreement on Cultural Cooperation, Agreement on Mutual Recognition of the Equivalence of Educational Certificates and Scientific Degrees, Protocol on Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and Bangladesh, Memorandum of Understanding on Economic Cooperation, Memorandum of Cooperation between the Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Academy of the Diplomatic Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises.
