Bulgarian citizens should not travel to the countries of the Middle East and North Africa

Because of the continuing escalation of the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, which is creating highly increased risks to security and personal safety, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly recommends that Bulgarian citizens refrain from all travel to the region, especially Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Libya.

Recommendation to refrain from any travel to Egypt

On August 14 2013, the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt announced the introduction of a State of Emergency for a period of one month. In this connection, a daily curfew between 7pm and 6am has been introduced in 14 provinces as follows: Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Suez, Ismailia, Asiut, Sohag, Beni Suef, Minya, Beheyra, South Sinai and North Sinai, Suez and Qena. The curfew is in force for the duration of the emergency.

Current situation in Egypt

In regard to the continuing escalation of tensions in Egypt, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that Bulgarian citizens refrain from travelling to the country unless as a matter of emergency. It is recommended that all planned trips to the Arab Republic be postponed until the situation in the country has normalised.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Bulgarians in Egypt to exercise caution

According to the Embassy of Bulgaria in Cairo, mass demonstrations are planned in Egypt in the next few days. In parallel, there will be mass rallies in support of the government. Major demonstrations are scheduled for June 30 2013, but it is possible that tensions will escalate before that.

Tragic incident in Egypt

Today, near Luxor, Egypt, a hot-air balloon that was carrying 21 tourists exploded. Nineteen people died while the survivors include the pilot and one of the tourists.

Advice to Bulgarian citizens travelling and living in Egypt

In regard to the state of emergency announced on January 27 2013 by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi and the critical situations in Port Said, Suez and Ismailia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Bulgarian citizens to refrain from travelling to these cities. Bulgarians resident there should obey the curfew in force from 9pm to 6am and should comply strictly with the orders of the local security forces.
