Statement by Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov on the dramatic escalation of the situation in Jerusalem
19 November 2014 NewsBulgaria is deeply concerned over the dramatic escalation of the situation in Jerusalem, which, after the terrorist attack on 18 November, threatens to attain interethnic and interreligious character.
Once again we strongly condemn the brutal murder of Israeli citizens during the morning prayer in the synagogue in Jerusalem. We stand firm on the position that such acts of terrorism cannot be justified by any cause. All statements and actions that directly or indirectly support or incite aggression are absolutely unacceptable and reprehensible.
We urge Israel and the Palestinians to reconsider the recent events and to do their utmost to immediately calm down the situation . The Palestinian national unity government should make every effort to put under control the extremist factions and circles whose actions threaten the peace and security in the region.
We emphasize that the peace process is seriously threatened in these circumstances and the prospects for its resumption have drastically decreased.
We call on all leaders in the region to make every effort to end the violence and bring both parties back to the negotiation process.
We are confident that this is the only way to achieve lasting solution to the Middle East conflict based on the principle of two independent states coexisting in peace and security.
