Kristian Vigenin: Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine gain firm European perspective

27 June 2014 News

Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria on the signing of Association Agreements between the European Union and Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine

The Republic of Bulgaria welcomes the signing today in Brussels of Association Agreements between three European countries - Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine and the European Union. We share the opinion of the European Council President Herman van Rompuy and the European Commission President José Manuel Barroso that this is a historic day for the EU, for the three signatory countries and for the whole of Europe. We believe that with the signing of Association Agreements Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine gain firm European perspective.

We congratulate the people and the governments of the three countries that showed determination for holding successful negotiations, adopting legislation in compliance with the European standards and starting reforms in various sectors in order to meet the standards required for the signing of the Agreements. A lot of work on the implementation of the Agreements remains to be done and Bulgaria is committed to provide the necessary expertise and assistance.

We believe that these Agreements will provide additional impetus to the deepening of the excellent bilateral relations between Bulgaria and the three countries. For us it is important that the historical Bulgarian communities in the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine will gain new opportunities to interact with Bulgaria and enjoy the benefits of free movement and educational and cultural rapprochement with the EU.
