11 October 2013 News

Minister of Foreign Affairs Kristian Vigenin congratulated the Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ahmet Uzumcu, on the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to the organization. "This award is a testimony of the praise of the international community of the role of OPCW and its overall contribution to a world free of chemical weapons," was said in the congratulatory message of Minister Vigenin. He noted that since its establishment in 1997, OPCW plays a key role in the elimination of existing stockpiles of chemical weapons, thereby contributing to strengthening the international security.

“The chemical attack in Syria in August 2013, which took hundreds of casualties , including children , is an evidence that the international community can not spare any effort in the fight for the destruction of chemical weapons, so that such crimes against humanity cannot be repeated," wrote the Bulgarian Foreign Minister. The work of OPCW is important in achieving this goal , he added.

According to Kristian Vigenin, the Nobel Peace Prize is a recognition of the success and effectiveness of the multilateral disarmament agreements . "As a party to the Chemical Weapons Convention and member of the OPCW , Bulgaria remains committed to the implementation of the Convention and will continue to work for its universalisation," the Foreign Minister concluded.
