Essential items and materials collected in a campaign by MFA and foreign diplomats in Sofia

Essential items and materials for the refugees from Syria were collected in a campaign by MFA and foreign diplomats in Sofia. The ceremony on transferring the collected during the MFA campaign items for the families of the affected by the Syrian conflict refugees, seeking asylum in Bulgaria, was held today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As a result of the campaign, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs collected and delivered to the Red Cross and SAR over 300 packages of clothes and shoes for babies, children, women and men, over 10 bags of toys, around 100 packages of pillows, duvets and more than 50 packs of diapers, baby food and hygiene products, as well as a significant amount of packaged foods, for the most part provided by the Embassies of the Arab states in Sofia.

Secretary General of MFA, Ambassador Latchezar Petkov, gave the collected donations on behalf of the Ministry to the President of the Red Cross, Hristo Grigorov, and the Chairman of the State Agency for Refugees, Nikolay Chirpanliev. Two trucks packed with food and hygiene materials were provided in the presence of the ambassadors of several Arab countries, accredited in Sofia and united by the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of the Palestinian Authority, Dr. Ahmed Al Madbuh.  

The campaign of MFA emerged on the initiative of employees of the diplomatic department.  Driven by their sympathy to the fate of the refugee families and the desire to support institutions in their efforts to address the crisis situation, almost all diplomats took part in the initiative. In active cooperation with the Red Cross and SAR, items and materials urgently needed for refugees in the newly established Registration and reception centers in “Vrajdebna” and “Voenna rampa” neighbourhood were collected.

Invitation to participate in the donation campaign, organized by the diplomatic department, was sent to all missions accredited in Sofia. The Embassies of the Vatican, Sudan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Japan, Kuwait, Italy and Poland, as well as those of most Arab countries have responded so far and the collection of donations continues.
