Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel: Bulgaria supports Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic perspective

14 October 2023 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Gabriel met on 13 October at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Iliya Darchiashvili.  This is the first visit of a Georgian foreign minister to Bulgaria in 10 years, the invitation was extended by the Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister.

"Minister Darchiashvili's visit to Sofia comes at a particularly important moment for Georgia - against the background of the high ambitions of the Georgian government and society for European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the country. As an EU and NATO member state, which has gone through the long and sometimes difficult path of reforms, Bulgaria understands well the importance of the current moment for our Georgian partners and supports Georgia's geopolitical choice", Deputy Prime Minister Maria Gabriel said after the meeting.

She pointed out that Bulgaria and Georgia have long-standing, historical, friendly and cultural ties and that our nations share common values and aspirations. Maria Gabriel also said that Bulgaria unconditionally supports the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.

The important role of Georgia for the security and stability of the Black Sea region, including in the current complex geopolitical context, was also discussed.

Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel recalled the decision of the European Council of June 2022, which granted Georgia a European perspective. "Together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, we reviewed the achievements, outlined the efforts made in each of the key areas.  Bulgaria will continue to support Georgia on the path of its European integration", Gabriel underlined.

Other topics discussed at the meeting included: connectivity in all its aspects - regional, economic, infrastructural, digital.

They also discussed the possibilities for deepening cooperation in the implementation of projects of common interest - in energy, communications, high-tech and innovation, education and culture.
