The first meeting of the ICM in the new composition of the government has taken place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the participation of responsible Deputy Prime Ministers and experts from the ministries.

Within the framework of the agenda, a review has been made on the state of the process of the accession of Bulgaria to the OECD, which is entering the active phase of the technical assessments by the individual committees of the Organisation.

The Deputy Prime Minister Maria Gabriel thanked the institutions for the great work, which has been done so far by noting that the maintaining of the good pace is requiring a maximal mobilisation. She underlined that the process of joining the OECD is an opportunity for our country to improve the effectiveness of the public policies in accordance with the highest standards. The ultimate goal would be not just a membership in the OECD, but enhancing of the legislation and practices in important areas such as public governance, environment, anti-corruption, competition protection, digital economy, investment, education and others.

The undertaking of further measures for the strengthening of the coordination and the active participation of Bulgaria in the meetings of the committees and working groups of the OECD was discussed. With the launching of the process of accession, our country received an opportunity to participate in the work of all working formats of the OECD, which is a possibility for Bulgaria to make her contribution to the elaboration of solutions to the global challenges.

The mechanism has been functioning since 2017 as a permanent council with the main task to carry out an overall coordination of the process of preparation of Bulgaria for a membership in the OECD. The ICM is chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs under the operational chairmanship of a Deputy Minister designated by him and includes Deputy Ministers of other ministries, Chairpersons of government agencies and commissions, and heads of other institutions implementing measures on the preparations of Bulgaria for a OECD membership.
