Political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Albania

17 May 2023 News

On 16 May 2023, political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Bulgaria and Albania took place in Tirana at the level of Director General.

In the course of the talks an overview of the state of bilateral relations was made. The economy, tourism, education and science were identified as possible areas for deepening mutually beneficial cooperation. This year, both countries mark 110 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations and 30 years since the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, which provides an important additional incentive to deepen political dialogue and intensify sectoral cooperation.

The discussions also focused on the European integration of the Western Balkans and Tirana's progress in this process. Ms. Slavena Gergova, Director General for European Affairs, noted our country's consistent support for Albania's European integration, in line with the principle of own merits. Bulgaria is ready to continue helping its Albanian partners by sharing experience and practical expertise from the pre-accession process, for which specific areas are to be identified.

On the part of the hosts, Mr. Sokol Dedja, Director General for Strategic and Political Affairs, underlined that his country is grateful for Bulgaria's clear position and readiness to support Albania in the integration process in the future.

Among the topics of discussion were the common security challenges in the region following the Russian aggression against Ukraine. The key role of the construction of Corridor 8, a project of strategic importance for both countries in terms of improving connectivity and security in the region, was underlined. In this context, the efforts of the Bulgarian state, within the EU, to maintain focus on this project and to secure European funding for its implementation were appreciated. As NATO allies, Bulgaria highly appreciates Albania's contribution to the NATO multinational battalion battle group deployed on Bulgarian territory. This is proof of the strong allied solidarity between the countries to enhance security in the region.

Within the framework of its visit to Tirana, the Bulgarian delegation also held a meeting with representatives of Bulgarian National Minority organisations in the country. They discussed a number of issues that the citizens of Albania with Bulgarian identity identify as priorities for the community. Mrs. Slavena Gergova stressed that the care for the Bulgarian communities abroad is and will continue to be a priority in the foreign policy.
