17 May 2021 News

May 17, 2021 marks the 65th anniversary of Bulgaria's membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO.

Since its presence on May 17, 1956, the country has not shared and worked actively for the realization of noble ideals in UNESCO and has become a reliable partner for the implementation of the goals and programs of the organization.

Evidences of this are many - Bulgaria hosts landmark international forums under the auspices of UNESCO, including the only General Conference, held outside the organization's headquarters in Paris in 1985, multiple membership of the country in the Executive Board of UNESCO, active participation in the intergovernmental committees of the Organization, the numerous projects implemented and initiatives implemented. For a period of eight years - from 2009 to 2017, Director-General of UNESCO is Irina Bokova.

For 65 years in UNESCO the priorities of the Bulgarian side have been developing. If until the democratic changes in 1989 UNESCO was one of the few "windows" to the world, in the first decade after the changes Bulgaria helped to organize the restructuring of important aspects of culture, education and science policy, while maintaining activity was the role of the initiator of important ideas such as the Sofia Conference on Media Freedom in 1997.

Bulgaria's accession to the EU provides additional added value to Bulgaria's participation in UNESCO. The Bulgaria-UNESCO Trust Fund is established, through which the country finances important projects in the organization, contact the prevention of anti-Semitism through education, the impact on climate change on cultural heritage and others.

"Motor" for work under UNESCO, as well as the National Commission, which generates ideas and proposals and coordinates the Bulgarian participation in the program of the organization and ministries, is related to the application to UNESCO, the wide network of national committees, clubs and associations.
