Declaration on Nuclear Safety adopted at Diplomatic Conference in Vienna

The Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety has been unanimously adopted by the contracting parties meeting at the Diplomatic Conference of the Convention on Nuclear Safety, held on 9 February in Vienna. The participating countries agreed that the Vienna Declaration is a strong political document reaffirming the priority of the strict implementation of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS).
At the opening of the forum, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency / IAEA /, Yukiya Amano, reaffirmed the importance of nuclear safety issues and the need to strengthen measures in this area. In most of the statements, the delegates expressed support of the principles enshrined in the CNS, as well as those of the IAEA. The majority of speakers focused on the national measures adopted after the accident at the Japanese nuclear plant. They expressed readiness to strengthen controls on existing nuclear plants and to adopt higher standards in the construction of new nuclear facilities.
The Bulgarian delegation headed by Raiko Raichev - Director General of Global Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, included experts from the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy to BAS.
