Daniel Mitov: It is an honor to contribute to Bulgaria’s constructive foreign policy

06 August 2014 News

Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the institution with one of the greatest traditions in Bulgarian statehood. It is a big honor for me to be here and to make a contribution to Bulgaria’s constructive foreign policy in the next few months, said the new interim Minister of Foreign Affairs Daniel Mitov at a ceremony on handing over the power in the MFA.

During my term as Minister, I have put all my efforts in order to leave the ministry in the hands of the next minister in better condition than what I have inherited,  his predecessor Kristian Vigenin said. Regarding the foreign policy during this period, we have focused on strengthening Bulgaria’s position in Southeast Europe and the Black Sea region. We have managed to intensify the bilateral relations with most of the European countries. We have also worked on improving the condition of the Bulgarian communities abroad, particularly in Moldova and Ukraine. I hope that all the positive results will be appreciated and developed, said in conclusion Kristian Vigenin.

Minister Daniel Mitov briefly presented his future priorities, saying that they are very specific, as is the nature of any caretaker government. First, we need to set the conditions for the proper conduct of the elections abroad, he said. We will analyze the challenges of past elections in order to avoid them, as well as organize a good voter awareness campaign among the Bulgarian communities abroad.

Providing full support for Bulgaria’s nominee for EU Commissioner - Kristalina Georgieva, is also among the main goals of the new foreign minister.  We have to do everything possible for Bulgaria to have a much better portfolio and position in the composition of the next European Commission, he said.

As other priority tasks Minister Daniel Mitov identified the preparation of the upcoming NATO Summit in early September in Wales and the UN General Assembly in the fall. The agenda includes also taking institutional steps to join the European Single Supervisory Mechanism.

Minister Mitov received from his predecessor Kristian Vigenin a silver eagle of Khan Asparukh from of Voznesenka, a warrior sign of the Bulgarians, tribal totem of the Dulo Clan. The eagle is a symbol of victory and spiritual knowledge, as it was first used as a military emblem of the Persians.
